Like Legos? Interested in art?  Whatever your children love there’s a summer camp geared especially for them. Kids can learn to paint like Picasso, paddle a canoe, gallop a horse or hone their skills at sports, arts and academic specialty day camps of all persuasions. Or choose from a variety of general interest camps that are sure to suit your schedule and budget. Our Summer Camp Guide is your one-stop resource to summer day camps throughout the CSRA.

Art, Music and Dance Camps

Art Hounds
Weeklong camps from June 23 to August 1. Ages 4 through 4th grade. 4-6 year-olds, 9 a.m.-noon. Grades 1-4, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. or half day sessions 9 a.m.-noon or 1-4 p.m.
Campers will sniff out art in unusual and unexpected places. $180 full day camps for members, $200 for non-members. $108 half day camps members, $120 non-members.

Art Studio
Grades 5 and up. A different art focus each week including clay, basket weaving and painting. $120 members, $108 for non-members, half day, $180 members, $200 non-members full day.

Summer Stock

The three-week camp focuses on the art of musical theater with instruction in dance and choreography, theater and set design, music and instrumentation and visual art and costume design. $350 before June 1, then $375. Lunch and snacks provided. Tuition assistance available.

Great Ballets and Famous Ballerinas Workshop
June 2-6. 2:30-5 p.m. Ages 5-8.
Children will learn the genesis of classical ballet through the development of performance ballets. Each day, students will study one of the great classical ballets such as Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty.

Nutcracker Dance Camp

Creative Movement

A first introduction to the dynamics of music and movement. Skills taught through fun activities for motor development, movement exploration, creative play and problems solving. $225.

Drama Camp: From Story to Stage

Learn how to think on your feet with exciting theater games, improvisation, movement exercises and more. $225.

Fashion Camp

Summer Theatre Camp

Kindermusik: Village

Kindermusik: ABC Music & Me

This all new program changes each session and helps build a lifelong appreciation of music and movement. $75 per session. APDS Lower School.

Kindermusik: Our Time
June 16-20 and 23-27, July 21-25 and 28-Aug. 1. 2-2:45 p.m. Ages: 1 1/2 to 3 years old accompanied by a parent or adult caregiver.

Introduction to Music Theory
June 9-13 or 21-25. 3-3:30 p.m. Grades 1-6.
An introduction in basic concepts of music through harmony, rhythm and scales with discussions of melody, harmony and how they are found in basic musical forms. $60 per week. Maximum of 10 students per class. Knox Music Suite.

Intermediate Music Theory
June 9-13 or July 21-25. 12:30-1:30 p.m. Grades 7-10.
Fundamentals are discussed and the the students will move on to an introduction to the components of musical texture and harmonic principles. $120 per week. Maximum of 10 students per class. Knox Music Suite.

Music Theory College Preparation Course
June 9-13 or July 21-25. 1:45-2:45 p.m. Grades 11-12.
High school students planning to continue musical education into college will learn about intervals, meters, keys and scales as well as triadic forms, seventh chords and writing rules so the student can develop an understanding of how music comes together. $120 per week. Knox Music Suite.

Vocal Performance Camp
July 21-25 or 28-August 1. 9 a.m.-noon. Grades 9-12.
Learn stage presence, dramatic interpretation, repertoire and deportment, sight reading and staged scenes. A final performance will consist of solos, duets, small and large ensembles. Repertoir changes each session. $200 per week. Goodwin Commons.

Beginning Guitar Camp

A focus on healthy singing, choral repertoire,  musicianship, music fundamentals and All-State tryout materials.

Band Camp
June 16-20. Middle and high school students.
Work on challenging band repertoire as well as  musicianship and instrumental skills. Also will include beginning guitar and piano, world drumming and jazz band.

Orchestra Camp
June 23-27. Rising middle school and high school string players, with at least a full year of orchestra experience or private lessons.
Orchestra playing, (two age-appropriate ensembles) chamber music and classes in music theory and history. Alternate activities include guitar for beginners, double bass for violinists, celtic fiddling and recorder.

2008 Collage: Creative Arts Camp

Summer Theatre Workshops

Classes teach young actors basic theatre technique through dramatic exercises, theatre games, group singing and rehearsal experience for a final production.
Kids Theatre classes for children 5 and 6 years-old meet for an hour a week. The ensemble classes for older children are 90 minutes a week plus rehearsals. $40 registration fee. $145 for Kids Theatre, $245 for Ensemble Classes. Production date TBA.

Music Makers Around the World: Amerindians

Exploring the music of other cultures through singing, listening, instruments and creative movement. This particular session explores the music and culture of the Native Americans. $80 plus $26 materials.

Summer Explosion
An enrichment program that places students in their promoted grades where they are taught curruculum for the upcoming year by certified teachers. Work with the NeXT generation of LEGO Mindstorms to design, build and operate your team’s robot. Learn how to program you team’s robot to complete simple to complex challenges and follow instructions to make it through a maze.

Mission: Discovery Mars
June 16-20. 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Grades 2-3.
Why is Mars red? How much would you weigh on Mars? Find out the answers to these questions, plus design your own space suit and helmet and build a space vehicle. Make goop and a rubber ball.

Space and Rocketry
June 16-20. 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Grades 4-5.
Young space adventurers will enjoy an exciting week planning a colony on Mars. Campers will design, build and test different rockets and space-related machines critical to the mission.

The Fast Track

Groom, saddle and bridle horses and gain experience in arena riding as well as trail riding. $175 for military, Department of Defense or retired military. Must have valid ID. $200 per week non-military. Short week of May 27-30. $140 for military, Department of Defense or retired military. $160 for non-military.

Cardio Kick-Boxing

This total-body cardio workout combines aerobic and anaerobic levels of activity, boxing movement, and conditioning exercises to increase flexibility, strength, balance and cardiovascular endurance. Note: Wear comfortable clothing, tennis shoes and bring a bottle of water. Cardio Kick-Boxing is not a martial arts workshop.

Ten hours of training and perform part of your 25 hours of service working with girls in one of the camp units. Work on your PA pin and patch. Prepares you to become a Leader in Training or Counselor in Training when you are a Senior Girl Scout.

Cadette/Senior Leadership Camp
June 8-13 resident camp.
Become a more efficient leader while learning about leadership styles and putting them into practice. All while enjoying traditional camp activities and working towards your Leadership Award.

CIT Program: Girls entering grades 11 and 12.

CIT I and CIT II
June 22-27 resident camp.
Girls entering 11th grade will learn skills needed to become camp counselors in CIT I. Girls entering 12th grade who have completed CIT I will provide special leadership training in CIT II in areas such as horseback riding, canoeing, archery, swimming or facilitating the low ropes course while working on their CIT II pin/patch.
