Editor’s Notes

By Karin Calloway   My nephews remind me of those word problems in math: Peppa is to Graham what Thomas was to Gage… Graham recently turned 4 and is more than slightly Peppa-obsessed. His Peppa village rivals only his brother’s Thomas-themed train table when he was 4.  I often joke that I’ve “aged out” of the demographic of the readership of this magazine, which is approximately 25-45. However, having two young nephews has kept me up on family life today. When my children were young, we limited their television time. Now it’s the iPad time that my sister, Leslie, monitors...

Bad Mommy

By Karin Calloway   As we’re enjoying family vacation season, I recently recalled one of my moments in which I could be labeled a “bad parent.” Yes, CSRA moms, nobody’s perfect! (A neighbor from when my kids were little, Fran Corbitt, used to say, “Let’s hope we make most of our mistakes when they’re little enough that they won’t remember.” Unfortunately, my story didn’t happen when they were too small to remember.) My bad mommy moment occurred on a family trip to Disney World. My children were probably 8 and 10 at the time. Tripp, my oldest, desperately wanted to...

A Winning Team

By Karin Calloway   I’m not a competitive person. Ask anyone who knows me well and they’ll agree. If you say, “I bet I can beat you at…” my response will most likely be a big “high five, you win,” even before the competition begins. But, as much as I’m not competitive, I’m a zealous team player. I find it exhilarating to be part of a team, to brainstorm ways to do things better, to make big plans for future goals. The team-player side of me trumped the non-competitive side in mid-April, when the Parenting Media Association held its annual...

By Karin Calloway   My parents, Paul and Carol Gage of Evans, have five grandchildren ranging in age from 3 to 24. As mother of two of these awesome kids and aunt to three, I’ve come up with a theory as I’ve watched them go from infant to adult. Here goes: I believe babies come to us as who they “are.” What I’m saying is that I believe their “nature” is intact when they come to us. My Tripp was a force of nature…all energy…all passion. I was able to follow the direction of our pediatrician, Dr. David Allen, and...

Inspiration & Spring

At the end of my term as president of the Junior League of Augusta my executive board gave me this “signed” movie poster. By Karin Calloway “Sure, I care about the job, of course. But mostly, I just want to be inspired.” -Dorothy Boyd in Jerry Maguire  Anyone who knows me very well knows that I’m a bit over-the-top in my love for the movie Jerry Maguire, a 1996 film written and directed by Cameron Crowe. If you’re unfamiliar with the movie, it’s about a guy, played by Tom Cruise, who works in sports management. He has a late-night epiphany...
