The Case of the Yellow Spots

Okay so I was trying to think of a good topic to write about for today and it hit me – in the nose to be exact! I’ve been doing some Spring Cleaning this past weekend. This included rearranging my daughters’ rooms. My oldest daughter is a pre-teen who wears tennis shoes almost daily. For quite a while now her room has had an odor that I thought was coming from her smelly shoes. We’ve sprayed her shoes with Lysol, washed them, let them sit outside to air out – tried whatever we could to get rid of the odor.

Then, on Sunday, we rearranged her room and, in the process, moved her bed – which had not been moved in probably 2 years. That’s when it hit me! Where her bed had been, on her beige carpet were numerous yellow spots. I wondered what they were and then I touched them. They were hard and somewhat brittle as if they had been wet before. The closer I got to the yellow spots, the worse the odor got. I looked in the doorway of my daughter’s room to see my 3 pound Maltese, Sara, looking at me with her head cocked to the side as if to say, “Why are you touching my secret spots?”

I’ve always known that Maltese dogs are smart, but for her to hide her urine underneath my daughter’s bed (because she knows she is not supposed to use the bathroom inside the house) is amazing to me. So I spent yesterday cleaning the carpet with the Hoover carpet-cleaner. I’m concerned about Sara still being able to smell the urine and continuing to “mark her territory” so I went online for some suggestions. I found one that I hope will work.

It seems that Baking Soda will clean just about everything. So, after I cleaned the area with the commercial cleaner, I took baking soda and sprinkled it on the damp carpet. I used a brush to scrub the baking soda down into the fibers of the carpet. Then I sprinkled another layer of baking soda on top and let it sit until the carpet dried several hours later. After that, I vacuumed. So far, I don’t have any more odor, but I will have to check in a couple of days to see if it comes back.

And, I’ll be taking Sara outside more often…
